Background of the Study:
Traditional music in Akure South Local Government is not merely an art form but a critical medium that fosters community cohesion and reinforces cultural identity. Rooted in indigenous history, traditional music encapsulates narratives, rituals, and collective memories that bond community members (Akin, 2023). Through communal performances, festivals, and informal gatherings, music serves as a bridge between generations, facilitating the transmission of cultural values and social norms (Ola, 2024). However, the rise of modern music genres and digital media poses challenges to the prevalence of these traditional forms, potentially weakening their role in community unity (Babatunde, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted role of traditional music in strengthening community bonds and sustaining cultural practices, highlighting its socio-cultural importance in a modernizing society (Akin, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Traditional music, a cornerstone of cultural expression in Akure South, is under threat from modern entertainment alternatives. Declining engagement with traditional musical forms may weaken community cohesion and erode cultural values (Ola, 2024). This study investigates the challenges facing traditional music and its impact on community unity (Babatunde, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To investigate the role of traditional music in promoting community cohesion.
To identify challenges affecting the preservation of traditional music.
To propose strategies for sustaining traditional music within the community.
Research Questions:
How does traditional music contribute to community cohesion in Akure South?
What challenges threaten the continuity of traditional music?
What measures can enhance the role of traditional music in cultural preservation?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional music significantly enhances community cohesion.
Modern entertainment alternatives negatively impact traditional music practices.
Community initiatives can revitalize interest in traditional music.
Significance of the Study:
This study highlights the importance of traditional music in reinforcing community bonds and preserving cultural heritage. Its findings will support efforts to promote traditional music as a means of sustaining social cohesion amid modern influences (Akin, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Akure South Local Government, Ondo State, focusing solely on the role of traditional music in community cohesion. Limitations include potential respondent bias and reliance on qualitative data.
